About the treatment
What Allergy & Asthma Counselling involves
Medicines are only part of managing allergy and asthma. How the home is set up, how triggers are handled, how devices are used and how a flare is recognised all shape day-to-day control. Allergy and asthma counselling is a structured session — for the patient, and often the whole family — that turns a diagnosis into a practical plan.
Who it helps
- People newly diagnosed with asthma, allergic rhinitis or eczema
- Parents of children with allergies, including food allergy
- Anyone whose symptoms are not as well controlled as they should be despite treatment
- People about to start allergen immunotherapy who want to understand the course
What a session covers
Understanding your condition
A plain explanation of what is happening in the airways or skin, what your test results mean, and what the treatment is trying to achieve.
Identifying and reducing triggers
We go through your specific triggers and work out realistic changes: dust mite measures in the bedroom, managing damp and mould, pet arrangements, pollen timing, and smoke and pollution exposure.
Using devices correctly
Hands-on practice with inhalers, spacers, nasal sprays and, where relevant, an adrenaline auto-injector, until you are confident.
Recognising and acting on a flare
You leave with a written action plan that sets out your regular treatment, what a worsening looks like, what to do about it, and when to seek urgent help.
What to bring
- All current medicines and devices, including empty inhalers
- Any previous test results or hospital letters
- A note of what a typical bad day looks like and what seems to set it off
- Your questions — written down, so nothing is forgotten
Afterwards
You will have a personalised written plan and, where useful, printed information for school or work. There is no medication given in the session itself, so there is nothing to react to; the aim is confidence and a clear routine. A follow-up is usually arranged to check how the plan is working and to adjust it.
Booking
Counselling can be booked alongside a consultation or as a dedicated appointment. Families are welcome to attend together, and sessions can be focused on a child, a teenager or an adult as needed.
This page is general information and not a substitute for a consultation. Symptoms overlap between conditions, so a clinician's assessment is the reliable way to know what is going on and what will help in your case.
